New Delhi : The flood situation in Assam remains grim as seven more people died on Wednesday after drowning in floodwaters taking the state death toll to 66.

Nearly 36 lakh people from 26 districts are affected in the current spate of the flood.

According to the flood reports of Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), three persons drowned in floodwaters in Morigaon district while two in Barpeta district and one each in Sonitpur and Golaghat district.

3376 villages under 93 revenue circles of 26 districts are currently underwater and the floodwaters have submerged nearly 1.28 lakh hectares of agricultural lands.

Nearly 22 lakh domestic animals are also affected in the current spate of the flood.

Dhubri is the worst-hit district with 5.51 lakh people affected in the deluge followed by 5.29 lakh people in Barpeta district, 4.27 lakh people in Goalpara district, 4.20 lakh people in Morigaon district, 2.25 lakh people in South Salmara district, 1.81 lakh people in Darrang district, 1.44 lakh people in Kamrup district, 1.27 lakh people in Nalbari district, 1.23 lakh people in Golaghat district.

36,320 flood affected people are currently taking shelter at 629 relief camps.

The water level of Dhansiri river flowing above danger level mark at Numaligarh in Goalghat district, Jia Bharali at NT Road crossing in Sonitpur district, Kopili at Kampur and Dharamtul in Nagaon district, Beki at Road Bridge in Barpeta district and Kushiyara at Karimganj.


On the other hand, while the water level of few rivers is receding, the level of the Brahmaputra river is still flowing above the danger level at Neamatighat in Jorhat district, Tezpur in Sonitpur district, Guwahati, Goalpara, Dhubri district.

The NDRF, SDRF and district administration on Wednesday have rescued 3,991 people from Barpeta, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Kamrup and Morigaon district.

In Baksa district, the floodwaters of Daranga river had washed away a person at Nagrijuli area along Indo-Bhutan border.

The floodwaters have damaged 187 embankments, 129 numbers of bridges, culverts and 1385 numbers of roads across the state.

According to the reports, the man went to the area to collect some fire woods, but the floodwaters of the hilly river washed away the man in front of many locals.

On the other hand, the floodwaters of Brahmaputra river entered into a police station in South Salmara Mankachar district.


The Sukchar police station in the bordering district with Bangladesh inundated by floodwaters on Wednesday and the police personnel were forced to use boats and work with water inside the police station.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal visited flood-affected areas of Kaziranga National Park.  "The staff of the national park are committed towards the safety of the animals here," he said.

As many as 66 animals have died as the floods-water submerged in Assam's Kaziranga national park, an official had said on Wednesday. P Shivkumar, Director of Kaziranga national park, informed that Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will be visiting the area to inspect the current situation.

"This year's flood was among the highest floods in the states. So far, 66 animals have died and 170 animals have been rescued from the national park," he said.

The forest officials are being assisted by the civil administration, police administration and the villagers in the area, he said.
