New Delhi : The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is seriously exploring the possibility of conducting the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) during the September – November window.

However, a decision will be taken only after the ICC officially announces cancellation or postponement of the T20 World Cup, which was scheduled to kick off in Australia between October 18 and November 15th.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) board meeting is scheduled for Monday, and the BCCI official said currently that the biggest agenda on the table is the fate of the World Cup.

“The BCCI apex council has agreed in the favour of conducting IPL this year, provided ICC cancels or pushes the World Cup and the government agrees. The general consensus is that hosting in India is not possible amid growing Covid-19 cases and the UAE seems to be a viable option,” the BCCI said.

Meanwhile, the apex council of the BCCI, which met via video conferencing on Friday, has given a go-ahead for IPL 2020, provided slot availability and permission by the government of India.

It was first written on April 1st that the BCCI is not cancelling the 13th edition of the league and is weighing various options, including deferment of the league to September or October.

A source had said that the board was of the view that ICC will have to defer the World Cup, and the Asia Cup could also get cancelled giving BCCI a clear 2-3 month window for IPL.

The reasons behind zeroing on UAE is because of proximity to India, favourable time zone, infrastructure availability, and most importantly a 7-day quarantine period for flyers coming in from low-risk countries.

“Apart from good stadiums, weather, and time zones, the most important factor right now is UAE’s quarantine policy. It’s the only country which has 7-day isolation for travellers from low-risk countries,” the official said.

Both, the ICC and the BCCI have been delaying taking a decision on the fate of the respective tournaments, which has rattled the media rights holders.
